Why Choose Online Therapy?

advantages of online therapy vs. traditional therapy

𑁍 Prioritize privacy and confidentiality by using HIPAA-compliant video platforms (instead of sitting in a public waiting room)

𑁍 Have greater autonomy in choosing your therapist, instead of being limited to whoever is located in your immediate area

𑁍 Heightened safety for those with mobility or sensory issues, immunocompromised folks, or folks with other needs that may make traditional in-person therapy feel unsafe or overstimulating

𑁍 For high-profile clients or public figures, avoid the spotlight that can come with showing up in public

general tips for online therapy:

  • To the best of your ability, make sure your internet connection is reliable. We will always have a backup plan in case we lose connection, but we want to minimize time spent on tech issues.

  • Create a distraction-free space. This is your time. This might look like setting your phone to do not disturb, arranging childcare, closing your office door, or

  • Keep comforting items nearby. One of the benefits of telehealth is being in your own space, so make it comfy! I have clients who attend session with blankets, fidget toys, tissues, cozy beverages or snacks, pets, you name it! That said, please be mindful of not bringing things into the space that may distract you from the therapeutic process.

  • Be aware of lighting. To ensure the best therapy experience possible, we need to be able to see each other! Be mindful of where the lighting in your space is so that it doesn’t hide you from the camera.

how does online therapy work?

before starting therapy…

The first step is to reach out here so we can set up a free consult call. I’ll ask about what’s bringing you to therapy now, give you a sense of my therapeutic style, and of course answer any questions you have. We’ll cover logistics, including whether online therapy is a good fit. If we agree to move forward, I’ll send you some intake paperwork and a Zoom link for our first session.

during the first session…

It’s normal to feel nervous during the first session. I’ll introduce myself and guide the session by asking gentle and thoughtful questions, and there will always be space for you to ask any questions. The goal is for you to get comfortable with the format of online therapy and for us to gradually build trust. Before the session ends, we will discuss next steps, whether that means scheduling our next session, identifying goals, or leaving you with some tools to practice.

moving forward…

Based on our discussion in the first session, we will continue sessions at a frequency that works for you and focused on the treatment goals you identified. I will help you learn practical tools, explore and honor your emotional experiences, and heal the root causes of your current challenges so you can find peace and clarity. Throughout our work together, we’ll check in often about how it’s going. If we need to make any adjustments, we can totally do that.

FAQs about online therapy in california

  • Online therapy can be a great fit for many folks, especially those who:

    • Value flexibility and want to be able to attend therapy from anywhere in California

    • Feel more comfortable opening up or doing emotional work from the safety of a familiar environment

    • Have busy schedules and don’t have time to drive elsewhere for therapy

    • Have a private, comfortable space to participate in therapy sessions, as well as a reliable internet connection

    • Don’t mind occasionally saying hello to my cat, Jonesy

That being said, there are some folks for whom online therapy is not the best fit. In-person therapy may be better suited for those who:

    • Actively experience suicidal thoughts, severe substance use, or other safety issues

    • Do not have access to reliable internet/phone service, or are not comfortable utilizing video technology

    • Do not have access to a private space where they would feel comfortable engaging in therapy

If you have any questions about whether online therapy is a good fit for you, please feel free to reach out!

  • Yes! By conducting online therapy sessions via a HIPAA-compliant video platform, we ensure that your therapy sessions are private, secure, and confidential.

  • Yes! The research has shown that virtual therapy is just as effective as in-person therapy. More than any modality or technique, the most important component of effective therapy is the relationship between therapist and client. Having started my practice during the COVID-19 pandemic, I’ve also seen firsthand the profound healing that clients have achieved via telehealth sessions.

  • The beauty of online therapy is that we can meet for sessions anywhere in California! On vacation somewhere else in the state? Great, we don’t have to skip sessions (unless you want to). Stayed out too long and can’t make it home in time? Cool, just pull over somewhere safe and log on via your phone.

I ask that you have a private, distraction-free place to participate in therapy. Please don’t sign on from the grocery store or while out with friends — it’s really hard to focus in those situations. I also do not conduct sessions while clients are actively driving a vehicle.

While there is a lot of flexibility with online therapy, I am still bound to state licensing laws, so I can only see folks who are physically located in California at the time of our session.

  • Um, YES. Meeting everyone’s pets is basically my favorite part of telehealth. You’ll probably meet my cat at some point too!

  • All you need is a safe, private space to join the virtual therapy session, a reliable internet connection, and a device with a camera and microphone (this could be a computer, tablet, or phone). We will agree on a backup plan at the beginning of our work together to prepare for situations where we might get disconnected or have tech issues.
